OVERVIEW OF THE TRIP

This is an outline of the route for our Morocco trip. I hope you enjoy the variety of different kinds of links here. We will be flying into Rabat, the capital city of Morocco. We are renting a car for the whole trip. We will take a few days to manage our jet lag before heading south to the coastal town of Essaouira (see some photos). Three nights to relax and take in the sights before heading off to the bustle of Marrakech (YouTube video 2m45s). After four days exploring the medina and the monuments of this ancient walled city, we head off into the Atlas Mountains crossing the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass to Ouarzazate and nearby Ait Benhaddou and on to the Dades Gorge. From there we will make our way to Merzouga for a camel ride out into the desert to spend a night in a Berber tent under the stars. A long drive to Fez will bring us to the oldest of the Imperial cities. Fez (or Fes) is believed to include the largest medieval car-free urban area in the world. We will undoubtedly get happily lost in the labyrinthine souks of the medina. Next we will drive to the blue city of Chefchaouen for some relaxing time before our trip back to Rabat-Sale and our return flight home.
